State of the Add-ons Report: June 12th
June 12th, 2008We are now 5 days from the Firefox 3 release. Lots of good news.
Last week we setup a survey to ask which add-ons were blocking users from updating to Firefox 3. This survey was advertised on twitter and Lifehacker, with a few re-postings by proactive users. There were about 1200 responses all said and done, here is what we found:
Since that survey, I’m happy to report that Greasemonkey, Delicious Bookmarks, and Update Notifer are ready for Firefox 3! Hot on their heels, expect to see Tab Mix Plus, Firebug, FireFTP (and many others) before next Tuesday.
Status of survey add-ons
Tab Mix Plus - 3.0a5 (bug) - Got word from the developer. He hopes to upload a 3.0 compatible version this coming weekend. Lets hope he finds copious amounts of time, and few bugs.
Greasemonkey - 3.0.* - Updated and ready for Firefox 3!
Firebug - 2.0.0.* (bug) - As soon as getfirebug.com comes back to life, the plan is to push a 3.0 compatible version to AMO. Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
Delicious Bookmarks - 3.0.* - Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
FireFTP - 2.0.0.* (bug) - Mime, the developer, plans to upload to AMO on Monday, June 16th. Just in time for Firefox 3! Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
All-in-One Sidebar - 3.0b5 - I have not been able to track anything down about this. Cross your fingers! Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
FEBE - 3.0b2 - Beta available. No word on addition to AMO.
ColorfulTabs - 2.0.0.* - Beta available. Hopefully will be added to AMO soon. Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
Mouse Gestures - 0.3 (bug) - Sadly, Mouse Gestures will not be updated by the time Firefox 3 release.
FoxyTunes - 2.0.0.* (bug) - Final version to be released with Firefox 3. Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
Update Notifier - 3.0.* - Updated and ready for Firefox 3.
MinimizeToTray - 2.0.0.* - Developer still working out a few kinks. Probably going to miss the Firefox 3 launch, but it is on the horizon.
All-in-One Gestures - 2.0.0.* - Developer is “working on it”.
Tab Effect - 2.0.0.* - Status unknown. Any information appreciated.
Not included in this chart, but still noteworthy. Gears is now available for Firefox 3 users. Grab it at their homepage.
That’s it. Onward to Firefox 3!

The one extension I’m missing in FF3 is the bugmenot extension.. And its compatible with 3.0b5, I guess making a 3.0 version probably only implies changing the version in the metadata, lets hope they do it soon

“Greasemonkey - 3.0.* - Updated and ready for Firefox 3!”
Cool. Hadn’t noticed that happening. I’ve just turned compatibility checking back on, cause everything works with it on now :)
Thanks for the update (and all the updates…)

For people who can’t live without “All-in-One Gestures” I highly recommend FireGestures from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6366
I had been using All-in-1 Gestures since Phoenix 0.6 and I was very, very skeptical of changing to another gestures extension, but FireGestures works just as well as All-in-1 and also can do (Text)Zooming with a gesture (which is broken in AiO) and its UI is better and less confusing.

“as soon as getfirebug.com comes back to life”…
That seems to be passing the buck.
As far as I can tell, getfirebug has been down for close to a couple of weeks, so there is no reason to believe it will come back to life any time soon. I really think that Mozilla should be sidestepping that, and getting (some version of) the source direct from the developers, and building and pushing out it’s own version of the xpi ASAP.

All In One Gestures works fine if you update the MaxVersion, and has since the first beta I tried (beta 2). No issues at all.
June 13th, 2008 at 5:43 am
Not one person said “Adblock Plus”???? I find that one hard to believe.
June 13th, 2008 at 6:31 am
AllInOneGestures can be replaced by Firegestures, which is compliant already.

Re.: All-In-One Sidebar
AFAIK the development of this extension has been taken over by the author of the EZ Sidebar. I noticed this a couple of weeks from the AIOS Author’s Website. But today there is no further information available. Strange.

Firebug is the one that makes me the saddest too, it’s a great tool for a web developer.
As for delicious: Glad to finally have it back!

What’s the status of Google Browser Sync? There’s no way i’m updating until that’s fixed.
June 13th, 2008 at 9:16 am
@Osmo, Nobody said Adblock Plus because it is already compatible!
@anon, we’re actively trying to take over the domain as well. Don’t worry we’re trying to make it happen!

Hi !
One extension I find really handy is Keyconfig and its henchman, Functions for Keyconfig: in Firefox for Windows, it enables single-key shortcuts similar to those in Opera; you can push Z to go back ton the previous Web page you visited in the current tab, or push X to go forward. Same goes for F2, which will let you open a new tab with a single stroke, instead of tapping ctrl-T. Actually, you can finetune Firefox’s navigation to your like quite easily, and I miss this extension in Firefox 3.
I sure hope the developer(s) who work on it will deliver a FF3-compatible version very soon. Otherwise, I’ll stick to Opera… There, I said it! :-)

@Didier: There’s an unofficial build of keyconfig at http://randomfoo.net/blog/id/4128 and is working fine with Fx3

In addition to Adblock (and I definitely won’t download until that’s available), the two most important extensions for me are Autocopy and Copy as Plain Text. Both have made my worklife 1000% easier. They’re usually pretty good at being updated. Here’s hoping!

Hi is there any info about google toolbar for Firefox3?
June 16th, 2008 at 3:19 am
There is no Google Toolbar for FF3 yet. I’m not updating until it is ready - the Word Find feature is far more important than any of the FF3 features.

I am ready for FF3! Shortly after installing FF3RC2 I uninstalled FF2.
I uninstalled the MinimizeToTray and FireFTP add-ons (went with FileZilla for FTP), and installed a DEV build of TabMixPlus.
Good to go here!
June 16th, 2008 at 4:51 am
The Google Toolbar is now up for FF3.
June 16th, 2008 at 5:12 am
@Mark - Google has abandoned Google Browser Sync, so it will never be updated for 3 (and who know how long they’ll support it for current FF users). See here: http://ryancollins.org/u/z
June 16th, 2008 at 6:55 am
How come nobody’s mentioned the Google toolbar? I can’t believe its not among the top extensions.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:11 am
Two that I won’t live without are Chris Pederick’s Web Developer and Adblock Plus!
June 16th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Looks like most of the missing ones people mentioned in comments are out now, including:
-AutoHideStatusBar
-autocopy
-bugmenot
-Firebug
-Scribefire
-scrapbook
And most of the rest can be installed if you force them.
June 17th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Also noteworthy is the GMail Manager Extension which is compatible in its newest release.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
@ Anurag - Google tool bar has been mentioned often here and just a few post above yours says that it is updated.
I can understand bugs…
But I am amazed that so many people will not upgrade just because of extensions…
Hope you are at least downloading it for that later date so you help with the record.
I have extensions I like and use for web development… but none so important it will stop an upgrade. Many will show up as updated in the next few weeks as always.
