State of the Add-ons Report: April 30th
April 30th, 2008Based on feedback from last weeks report, I’m going to change how we do this. I’m going to go through the status of the top 10 add-ons that are not yet on addons.mozilla.org with Firefox 3 compatibility.
Skype Toolbar for Firefox - 2.0.0.* (bug) - beta available over on skype’s website, not sure when it will land on AMO.
Firebug - 2.0.0.* (bug) - Platform/Firefox issues resolved, now blocked on Firebug performance issues that will be resolved in the Firebug 1.2 b1 release.
Tab Mix Plus - 3.0a5 (bug) - still no direct contact with the developer. On the development forums, there are working releases. However, if you know anyone in the TMP community updates, help is appreciated! We really want TMP to be ready for Firefox 3.
Noia 2.0 (eXtreme) - 2.0.0.* (bug) - Our status indicates that this will land with Firefox 3. Any further information would be appreciated.
FireFTP - 2.0.0.* (bug) - compatible on the development website, but no direct contact with the developer. Looks ready, but still not on AMO, and we have no idea why not.
Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer - 2.0.0.* (bug) - beta on dev website. No direct contact with developers.
FoxyTunes - 2.0.0.* (bug) - beta in the works, but have not seen it. We have had direct contact with the developer, but still have not seen the .xpi on AMO.
Blue Ice - 2.0.0.* (bug) - development homepage says “coming soon”. Limited contact with developer. No known available betas.
RedShift V2 RC1 - 2.0.0.* (bug) - comments on AMO indicate it is in the works, limited contact with the developer. Help appreciated finding out the current status!
PicLens - 2.0.0.* (bug) - beta available on the beta site. Not sure when it will be on AMO.
In summary, all of the top 10 not-yet-compatible add-ons have some sort of hint that a Firefox 3 compatible release is on its way. If you have any updates about RedShift, Blue Ice, TMP, or FireFTP, please let me know!

The developer of FireFTP told you on IRC that he will submit it when Fx3 gets released because people should get a compatible file from the install links on AMO (and most people use Fx2 as long as Fx3 hasn’t been released).

For TMP, there are dev builds at http://tmp.garyr.net/dev-builds/
(I’m using TMP 0.3.6.1.080325a build on Firefox 3.0b5)
I think the devs wait until Firefox 3 final is released.

@Archaeopteryx, ha, thanks for the reminder! tracking a lot of add-ons over here….. ;)
@LouCypher, do you have anyway to confirm that?

Does anyone know anything about Google Browser Sync? It made my (Firefox) life a lot easier, but no Firefox 3 support so far. Their website still says compatible with “1.5 and later”..

@Simone, Firefox 3 is a Faster Fox! :)

GOOGLE TOOLBAR!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
I agree, Google Toolbar should have been updated already.
However, I believe it’s not in the list because all Google extensions are never listed in the Mozilla Addons site.
Besides, I’m not sure Google would care as much as a normal developer if their extensions are in this top 10.
They’ll do it when they feel like doing it, which I assume will be close to FF3 final release.

What about Zotero? We’ve done co-branded builds released with Zotero in, and yet it still doesn’t support Firefox 3…

@gerv, Zotero is known to be working. We had to fix some Firefox bugs to get it so!
@Tonino, they are known to be working on it too, not sure of ETA

Firefox 3 Beta 5 shows great promise, and a few stunningly missing thoughts — but when is the first Release Candidate coming?
Beta 5 was out early April, then nothing more heard — well, seen too.

Joe, RC1 is due to be out very soon — hopefully by next week.

Alex, I thought I’d post and mention that I’ve contacted both Exploit Prevention Labs (LinkScanner/LinkScanner Pro) and Finjan (SecureBrowsing) regarding their products compatibility with Firefox 3.
I was assured by each company that they would be ready with compatible versions as soon as Firefox 3 was released. The person from Finjan said that he had just been at a meeting where this subject had been discussed.
It’s nice to see that the gap between major version release and Add-ons being compatible (at least the more popular ones) is pretty much closed. That has always been a major drawback, and a reason for many in the general public to delay switching, or hesitate moving to Firefox in the first place.
I can’t thank all the people involved with the development enough, (although I’ll try via my blog).
Many Thanks!
