Favicon Collective breaks 500 favicons!
April 14th, 2008Woohoo! After my last post, and a few additional users, we now have over 500 unique favicons in the favicon collection. I think if we can push through 1000 favicons, we will have the largest favicon collection on the internet.
If you would like to help add to the collection, install the Firefox 3 add-on.
This project has been a good skill-set tester… as it has required me to hack in Javascript/XUL, Firefox 3 apis (devmo++), google app engine, python, and django. If you find any bugs while interacting with this sausage factory, please be sure to file a bug on my google code project.

Maybe you should use the data: URI scheme to avoid hundreds of requests…

“This Google App Engine application is temporarily over its serving quota. Please try again later.” ;-)
Luckily, I did get a glance of the icons, before google decided to take a break. Great idea!
How about licensing issues? It’s not like a favicon is in public domain, and I think that a few icon authors might be offended that you’re uploading their work to your server and displaying it without consent. Currently, it’s probably still “fair use” (even though you’re not acknowledging the source of the icon), but once you start doing something interesting with them, people might notice.

I’m surprised that nobody’s contributed the Wikipedia favicon yet.

I think its kind of ironic that a favion site its self has no icon. Any chance that you could come up with one?

Ryan, that’s on purpose! This site is about other peoples favicons, not my own. :)

Ah but it would still be a nice thing - its strange having bookmarked a site dedicated to icons with none its self! Then again I guess I can just choose one of the many available now.
Looks to be over 2,000 now (2036 at the time of writing).
