Today I hosted Dan and Jane Moffat. Here are my experiences:
Dan and Jane arrived at around 12:45 with a phone call, “Alex, this is Dan –
we are parked right next to the ‘Holy Cow’. Can you please come to us and show
us where to park.” I stuffed the rest of my wrap into my mouth and ran out the
door. I zipped over to the service center to grab the parking passes, and then
luckily jumped on a shuttle that took me to the edge of campus.
Learned: The folks have packets of info/keys/parking permits in the service
center.
We dropped off the luggage in the suite and got ready for a talk with MBA
students. As we walked over to Bexel Dan asked me some questions that I did
not really know the answer to.
Question: Is the entrepreneurship program a 4 year program?
My response: If you take the minor, it would be. However, a lot of students in
Weatherford are in for only that year.
Once his talk was over I met up with them and walked back to the suite. There
they stayed for 3ish hours until dinner.
Comment about Dan: Dan is an interesting character.
Whenever I spoke to him his eyes wandered away and it seemed like he wasn’t
listening. But he would later surprise me with questions about the things I
spoke about. He would also ask me questions that he has asked me before, which
showed some of the time he wasn’t listening. I didn’t take any of this personal
because he is a busy freaking dude with a lot on his mind!
The turn out at dinner was great. Most people who signed up, showed up. The
discussion was about this lifeline, and ended with technical mojo about the
internet. Very worth my time.
Learned: The cards for dinner/breakfast are in the AEP office.
The fireside chat was also an interesting event. This time I was the only
Weatherford student — but there were about 25 MBA’s in the room. Everyone fit
in just fine. However, it was less firesidy — more just Dan talking. There
was room for questions at the end, but there was also a ‘listen to Dan talk
portion.’ This seemed ideal since the 25 MBA students were actually coming
from a class.
Learned: Dan has done 4 iron-mans.
Learned: This was not his first job.
Learned: Talent is a challenge.
Learned: Ilene is the Dean of the College of Business. (through ignorance)
Thing Dan said that inspired me: “I know I will finish.”
To sum it up in one sentence: The experience was great and I cannot wait for
the next entrepreneur to host.
Goal accomplished.
